Would you trust your child's teacher if you knew he/she got his/hers degree online?

n this day and age, many schools are offering online course, degrees and other certifications in an online manner, including teaching degrees and national board certification. Therefore, it is possible that your child's teacher, especially if he/she is of a younger generation, completed most, if not all of his/her studies online. Question is: would you be in any way worried about a degree that was achieved in technological way, compared to the old-fashioned classroom, when your kids are concerned?

Now that computers are a mainstream household item, many students of today's generation are choosing to complete their studies online. Here are a few reasons that makes these kind of studies so compelling:
  • Convenience - study from your own living room.
  • Match your own paste - you can repeat said sentences from a lecture, have a 2nd look at a slide show, save and review later, etc, etc.
  • Match your busy lifestyle - one logon is all that required, you can do that between your work and your visit to the gym.
  • Don't need to pay for gas - may seem funny, but now with gas prices over $4, not having to commute is even a bigger incentive.
  • Most times cheaper than a traditional school or university.
  • Enhances one's computer and technology skills (most course require some sort of knowledge in transferring files, creating documents, installing software etc.)
So, what's wrong with online education, or even online masters education? it seems unbeatable.
Check out this real ad for Online Masters Education: "MA in Education in 1 Year - 1 Year program with Teaching Credential. 98% Job Placement!" (This ad is real and current)
  • Frauds - everybody know about schools that practically selling you the degree without you needing to do much for it. This may not apply to education board certification, but may apply to the undergrad degree that was the base of the teacher's studies.
  • Supervision - the thought of easier passing grade at an online school is unavoidable, even just for the fact that those schools make their money on more people that are registering and passing their courses and they have much lower space limitations than physical institutions.
  • Weaving out the weeds - some think school is supposed to be hard. This was only the serious and dedicated people will get to the degree, thus empowering the degree with real credentials and bragging rights. Making it too easy will just make the degree a piece of paper that can be bought.
  • No contact with other students, especially for majors such as social and education.
Point is that we all value our children education probably more than any other thing done for our children, so given the choice, would you let an educator that you know got his teaching online degree, be the educator of your child?
I assume that if a fraudulent action was involved, most answers would be 'no'. So lets concentrate on legitimately achieved degrees of education. Most existing studies show no significant difference between the performance of online and traditional methods of teaching (Liu,et al). I am unaware of a research that was done specifically for teachers achievements however I am making the (safe?) assumption that students are students. Also another trend seemed to be that Online students like their studies more and describe them in greater details (have more time on their hands???) as the traditional students write less but returned a higher percentage of their papers. To me, this seem in-line with type of studies that are more conservative for the traditional studies and more liberal (do if you want - but wholeheartedly) for the online studies.

To conclude: I would definitely form my opinion of my kids teacher from talking to him/her and not based upon studies or credentials. However I would be very interested in hearing whether you have different or any other enlightening opinion about this topic.

I am close to getting my bachelor's degree online for early childhood education. I can guarantee that I did as much work if not more that people who attend classes. I think they make the material harder for online students and on top of homework assignments, we have to participate in discussion boards, take quizes and tests, and do field work.

You make a good point, the interview should absolutely make the judgment call, however even the interviewer sometimes needs to explain why he did not choose an MBA over a college graduate.
But I absolutely agree with you.

The qualification of a teacher can be understandable to a good interviewer.
Schools have to be selective on choosing teachers; that must be based especially on quality but not only by qualification.
There are living examples of people who are more knowledgeable than highly educated ones.
Thus, the real education cannot be measured with the certificates.
I believe so..
